MSB makes history, again. Amruth Prasad (29) and Max Yuan (28) have entered the MATHCOUNTS states final. Students from all over Michigan compete for a spot in the National MATHCOUNTS competition. Prasad and Yuan both scored almost six points over the average. There are two rounds in the MATHCOUNTS states final: one being the sprint round, and the other the target round. The target round had eight total questions, where the sprint round had 30. Both Prasad and Yuan scored above 20 on the sprint round, and above 4 on the target round. Gordon Powell, the coach for the MSB MATHCOUNTS team and 8th grade math teacher, explained that the target route is four sets of two problems, so students get about six minutes per two questions set. “Because of this, it is extremely hard to get above the average, as there is almost no time to think about the question.” “It was a cool experience for me, and I think others should try it out. “ said Prasad.
