Instead of staying warm in the comfort of their homes, students and community members attended the annual Jinglefest celebration despite the subzero temperatures. Among those individuals, sophomores Macie Keller, Ali Gundry and other Key Club members volunteered in downtown Fenton to help raise money for the Kiwanis Club. Standing outside the community center, the girls spent two hours roasting marshmallows that were sold for $1 along with a free cup of hot chocolate.
“I love volunteering because it’s nice to feel like a part of something, but it’s even better in the winter because there’s usually hot chocolate involved,” Keller said. “We had a bonfire by us to help keep warm during our shift, which definitely helped because it was so cold.”
Although the fire was able to keep Key Club members warm, the hot chocolate they served dropped in temperature faster than the members could serve it to the their customers. In order to keep up the pace, they quickly dumped out the cold drinks and refilled and replaced them with another warm brew.
“We found ourselves frantically refilling cup after cup for customers,” Gundry said. “In the end, it turned out to be a success because we raised a lot of money for the Kiwanis Club.”
Even though the chilly weather created obstacles for the Key Club volunteers, they persevered and continued to try to spread cheer during the holiday celebration. After distributing the warm treats, volunteers returned to their homes where they continued with their own
holiday preparations.
