The Go Green club will conduct DHS’ first-ever waste audit during lunch today, Jan. 27. The audit will determine how much recycled material is going into the trash bins around DHS depending on if there is a recycling
bin nearby or not. These results will highlight the work of Go Green in regards to spreading awareness of the importance of recycling.
“Sometimes it can be really hard to show progress, since it’s a never ending task,” junior and Go Green secretary Faith O’Connor said. “Here, we’ll be able to see how much of a difference Go Green is making, and maybe even attract new members.”
CMU’s Central Sustainability group will guide the auditing process.
The percentages from the audit will be obtained by weighing the amount of recyclable material found in a certain weight of trash.
Participation in the audit is open to everyone interested, and the results of the audit will be shared with all of DHS.
O’Connor emphasized the importance of the awareness the audit brings to everyone at DHS.
“Once you see the numbers, it’s easier to show number one, we are improving, but also number two, how much we can improve,” O’Connor said. “You can’t argue with facts. These statistics will make others stop and think about if they’re going to put things in the garbage or in the recycling.”
