“Guard through–we ran that [play] a lot. Point was at top and the wings go out and pass it to me, point would go to the basket and pass it back.” Alieah Bassage (7) describes the function of a complex play that worked well for the team at the end of the season, but not at the beginning. The team learned significant organization, but also lived through nailbiting fourth quarters and fun inside locker room jokes. “None of the seventh grade girls had played organized basketball before,” Coach John Mishler said. “I had to teach them everything, and they definitely came a long way.” Bassage stated that by the end of the season, the girls were wellaware of the plays, positions, and how to communicate as a team. Beyond this, the eighth grade team experienced an unexpected ordeal. Against Houghton Lake, Grace Danielak (8) suffered a concussion by tripping over a teammate and sliding head-first into a wall. “My teammates really felt bad,” Danielak said. “They told me that they all started crying, but that they would [win] for me.” Despite the team not winning the game, Danielak stated that she was proud of “how the girls came together.” “We pulled through,” Elizabeth Hoag (8) said. “We didn’t win, but we played for Grace.”
