On June 23, 2018, the Miss Beaverton pageant took place at the Beaverton Activity Center. Several of the five contestants expressed that they came to the realization that they shouldn’t expect perfection from themselves during the pageant. Second runner-up, Samantha Perras (12) said, “I don’t think it matters if you’re Miss Beaverton or if you place at all. You can’t win everything. I think it’s just a big accomplishment for everybody. You learn many life skills all from one pageant.” Although Perras described the pageant as a great experience, contestant Haylee Hannah (12) expressed feelings of nervousness about wanting to do well. “I was really nervous to go on stage and perform,” said Hannah. “The one thing I remember seeing was my family being there. I just stared at them the entire time. It calmed me down and I wasn’t freaking out.” First runner-up Elizabeth Smith (12) attempted to convey the message of imperfection by lip-syncing to the song “Nobody’s Perfect” by Hannah Montana. “What made me decide to do this,” Smith said, “was my 60 Seconds speech that I did before my talent. It was about being yourself and not trying to be anyone else, because no one is perfect and we shouldn’t try to be. I picked this song to really tie it together and enforce that we should all be ourselves, flaws and all.”
