The sound, the roaring, the stampede. In the distance, you’re able to see the varsity football team walking to the stadium with arms locked and ready to protect their house.
“My emotion is a bit of nervousness and a bit of being hyped up, seeing all the fans and the whole game day atmosphere,” junior Shane Lutz said. “It’s something great to experience at Swinehart.”
On Friday night home games, the team prepared by lining up and waiting for their coach, Matt Marulli, to motivate them. Before every game, Marulli inspired his team with a new speech to get them ready to go battle on their field.
“The first home game verses Grosse Pointe South, I remember coach saying for us to take in the moment, because you never know how long you have,” senior Jordan Hester said. “Also, that we have to own the moment and prove people wrong.”
As they listened to the crowd across the street, the team made its way over Shelby Road to Swinehart.
“My favorite parts are having the cheerleaders make the tunnel to walk through,” senior Matthew Hoppe said, “and smelling the field while walking over.”
Everyone had a personal favorite walk over.
“My most memorable walk over is the walk last year before the playoff game,” junior Shane Lutz said. “I think it was a great experience for us underclassmen and made us realize the importance of the tradition.”
The walk over to the stadium was one of the most memorable things about game night to the players and fans. It tugged on emotions, affected their play, and got them in the spirit to take on their opponents.
