Dashing through the hallways like Santa’s reindeer through snow, student representatives from classes race to submit money to student council members in the media center before the 10 minute timers run out each hour.
“I feel like it’s great to help out the community,” senior student council president Therese Reinhold said. “As a kid, you always imagine Santa coming down your chimney and receiving a large amount of presents. For kids who don’t receive, it hurts a lot and it scars them. I know it sounds kind of weird; but it’s true.”
The Toys for Tots telethon has been a school tradition since 2012. In an historic event, the students and staff donated a total of $17,245 during the week; surpassing previous Toys for Tots drives by thousands of dollars.
“I’m so proud of our council and grateful that we were able to surpass the amount from last year. It makes you feel really good because you know that we are going to be able to help out so many more families this year with the extra two to three thousand dollars we raised. It’s really fulfilling to know that we got to help that many more people,” senior student council vice president Cayla Kadets said.
All the money donated and toys collected by student council goes to help local children in need, according to the Toys for Tots organization. All gifts collected will be distributed to families in the metro Detroit area who need them most.
“We’re going to be able to help out a lot of kids this Christmas,” principal Jared McEvoy said, “and that’s what it’s all about.”
So many toys were donated that the Marine’s collection extended into a two day process, for the first time in school history.
“I though it was crazy that it took three whole truck loads. We made a lot more money than last year, so I was very happy with that outcome,” junior student council member Michael Yancy said. “We were running a little behind at our goal before fifth hour on the telethon and then we had like 500 more bucks and it was crazy.”
