Bump, set, spike, volleyball! The Brownell 8th grade girls volleyball team opened their home schedule against cross town rival Parcells on Monday September 28th.
Our talented volleyball team coached by Mrs. Trombley consists of Sydney A, Megs B, Victoria B, Martha D, Emily E, Maddy H, Hannah H, Alison L, Clare L, Josie M, Emily M, Lauren N, Emma P, Kari R, Eden W, Melanie Z, and student manager Naomi O. The Broncos were unsuccessful in their first two matches, losing both by two points 25-23.
Although all of the Broncos did very well in all matches, a few players that stood out were Melanie Z. with many powerful serves, some resulting in aces, and Kari R. with many great saves.
Parcells had a very tall player who also had very powerful hits as she whacked the ball over the net. However, Eden W. contributed to Brownell by spiking the ball right back over the net to put more points on the scoreboard.
There were many times that in order to keep the volley going and score increasing, the players had to run to spots and dive on their knees. It was obvious that Victoria B., Clare L., and especially Emily E. were willing to do these things whenever it was needed to boost the score.
In the last match, the Broncos managed to pull through and win 26-24 putting smiles on all of the Brownell faces. With Lauren N. working hard to keep the volley going and Martha D. confidently serving the last serve of the game to earn the two points they needed to have a victory, pounding the ball into the far back corner of the court. The girls ran together with bright smiles and kindly shook Parcells hands. “I think we played harder because it was against Parcells and we really wanted to beat them so we persevered.” says Maddy H.
Overall, the Broncos played very well in their first home game. They have more games to come and work hard in. They face the other cross town rival Pierce on Wednesday October 7 at Pierce while the next home game is Monday October 12 against Kennedy.
