Personality Profile
Several years ago, the art program ceased to exist at Laingsburg High School due to budget cuts. Whether they are sketching on worksheets during class or painting intricate wall murals in their basements, students have found ways to express their artistic abilities elsewhere.
“I’ve been doing art-related activities for pretty much my entire life,” junior Tristan Merchant said.
During class, Merchant is often seen drawing on his art tablet, and he even draws for commission.
“Art means a lot to me and is a very important part of my life which helps me express myself in a non-traditional way,” Merchant said.
Many students are hoping for an art class offered in the future, including Merchant.
“Bringing back the art program would be extremely important, as it lets people be creative,” Merchant said.
Merchant mostly draws on his tablet, but he also likes to experiment with calligraphy pens.
“I’m best at digital art work, but I also enjoy painting and sketching traditionally,” Merchant said.
In college, Merchant plans to keep drawing as a hobby while pursuing a career in computer science.
“The average person often takes all of the amazing art work in modern day films and books for granted,” Merchant said.
