Two teams face each other on opposite sides of the court, waiting for the whistle to start the game. For the varsity girls basketball team, this is the game they had been waiting for. They had made it to the MSU Breslin Center, and they were about to play in the state semifinal game against Calumet.
“I was very nervous before the semifinal game,” junior Hanna Righter said. “I knew it would be the biggest game of the season, and I didn’t want to let anyone down.”
The Breslin was filled with excited Laingsburg fans to cheer on the girls.
“It made the girls and I all have tears in our eyes to see over 1,000 fans there,” girls varsity head coach Doug Hurst said. “The community and student section was a big part of our history-making season.”
This year’s girls varsity team captured the first ever girls regional championship in school history. The team also captured the titles of CMAC and district champions.
“Our conference was really tough,” assistant coach Eric Wade said. “It was difficult to focus on anything but that, so getting to the semifinals wasn’t something we talked about during the regular season.”
The girls finished the season with a 26-1 record.
“This season has meant a lot. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience, and I am so glad to have been a part of it,” senior Jalynn Mitchell said.
