From age 10 to 15, sophomore Keenan\u00a0Smyth has been diving deep into rivers, lakes,\u00a0and other large bodies of water to retrieve\u00a0other people\u2019s lost possessions. When he was\u00a0nine, Smyth\u2019s uncle introduced him to scuba\u00a0diving. His uncle took him on a discovery dive,\u00a0which is a first dive with all of the equipment,\u00a0but no training. After his first discovery dive,\u00a0Smyth fell in love and wanted to continue\u00a0diving to become certified as a search and\u00a0rescue scuba diver.<\/p>\n

Between 2009 and 2010, Smyth was\u00a0qualified to take a written and physical\u00a0certification test after he had gone through\u00a0a training class. Throughout the class, he was\u00a0taught how to use his equipment properly.<\/p>\n

When Smyth goes under water, he wears\u00a0a wet suit, a mask, an oxygen tank, and a\u00a0breathing regulator. After his written test, he\u00a0had to take a physical test to prove he knew\u00a0how to use this equipment properly. He passed\u00a0his test and became certified shortly after.<\/p>\n

Since then, Smyth has retrieved things such as\u00a0wallets, phones, wedding rings, earrings, and\u00a0bracelets from deep under the water.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was always scary going down into the\u00a0water when I first started, because all you\u00a0would see was complete darkness in front of\u00a0your face,\u201d Smyth said. \u201cAfter more training\u00a0and practice, it wasn\u2019t so bad.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before they dive under, Smyth and his\u00a0diving team put together back-up plans in\u00a0case anything goes wrong.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe coolest thing I have ever experienced\u00a0was going under the water to find a semi\u00a0truck that had fallen through six feet of ice,\u201c\u00a0Smyth said.<\/p>\n

Smyth has a support team at home with\u00a0his mom, dad, and uncle. Most of his friends\u00a0don\u2018t know about his hobby, because it is not\u00a0something he often shares with people. His\u00a0father scuba dives with him, and has been for\u00a0many years. In his spare time, when he\u2019s not\u00a0out hunting for treasure, Smyth hangs out\u00a0with his friends and family, enjoying life.
