Out\u00a0of those 20,000, maybe 100 will be chosen\u00a0in any city,\u201d she explained. \u201cI auditioned to\u00a0test my odds. I believe in taking chances, and\u00a0I didn\u2019t have anything to lose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vekima, who began singing after starting piano\u00a0lessons at six, is certainly no stranger to\u00a0success. \u201cI took part in the American Guild of\u00a0Music competition at 13, and made it to\u00a0Nationals. I got first place for Vocals with\u00a0Accompaniment, third place for Vocal\u00a0Broadway, and second place for\u00a0Classical Piano,\u201d she said. \u201cI \u00a0qualified for Nationals again in April, but I didn\u2019t go because I had\u00a0so much going on then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vekima released an EP in October 2013, and credits her\u00a0ongoing success to her love for music. \u201cI write all my\u00a0songs about my experiences; they\u2019re raw and honest,\u201dsaid the singer, who cited Michael Jackson, Beyonc\u00e9,\u00a0and Elton John among her influences. \u201cI feel like\u00a0nowadays, people don\u2019t know that clean, stripped down music can be beautiful. That\u2019s the kind of music\u00a0I\u2019m trying to put out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She continued, \u201cI love singing other people&#8217;s\u00a0songs, but when I&#8217;m singing songs of my own, I bring\u00a0something deeper to the music. I&#8217;m confessing my\u00a0life to other people.
