 A common misconception, a necessity or a tedious limitation: the schedule change policy is one with many proponents and opposers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the student handbook, switching classes will only be approved due to scheduling errors, lacking or failing course requirements or transitioning to more challenging levels. Schedules can not be changed for a different lunch period, teacher, course hour or tutorial change. Although the policy remains the same, student feedback continues to resurface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many students, swapping classes can seem like a frustrating experience. Quin Grabowski \u201925 said she has made several attempts to switch classes throughout high school in hopes to match her course load to a difficulty best suited for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen you switch into a class, you want it to be as quick as possible so you don\u2019t miss as much material,\u201d Grabowski said. \u201cI know for me it was hard because it took a whole week just to get out of my current class and into a new one. That\u2019s a week I could have had instruction in the new class.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many times frustration from schedule changes can result in backlash to the counseling department. Counselor Beth Walsh-Sahutske explained the counseling staff isn\u2019t responsible for the barriers around schedule changes. They simply enforce the rules district administrators set. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf a student is overwhelmed and they bite off more than they could chew, we try to make that a better situation for them,\u201d Walsh-Sahutske said. \u201cWe will do what we can to try and make a change because we are not heartless people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reason for having scheduling rules is a logical one. Each year, administration notes the number of students interested in different classes. They are then tasked with pairing staff with each course and keeping student numbers at a balance. Preliminary schedule submissions are seriously looked at, and can even determine if a teacher will be forced into part-time work. English teacher Sandra McCue, said she appreciates how the attentiveness of the system holds students accountable for the choices they\u2019ve made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think (the policy) can seem really harsh to students, especially if they\u2019re unhappy about their schedule, but there is a reason behind the process,\u201d McCue said. \u201c(Administration has) really taken into consideration the teachers\u2019 complaints and concerns about schedule changes. It\u2019s a response to that and I find it to be really thoughtful, even though to students it might not always seem that way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On separate occasions, both McCue and Walsh-Sahutske share the same regard that students have adapted their understanding to the district\u2019s policy. Over the years, there is said to be less attempts at \u201cteacher-shopping\u201d and more acceptance that schedules can\u2019t change because a student changed their mind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHaving a system is important for efficiency,\u201d Walsh-Sahutske said. \u201cBut any sort of efficiency measure doesn\u2019t completely eliminate the need to have a personal connection. That\u2019s where we try to build in those opportunities to hear kids out, even if it doesn\u2019t hit those rules, and we try to meet the need as best we can.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NW-05. News Analysis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Stories should be interpretive in nature, not straight news stories. The elements \u201cwhy\u201d and \u201chow\u201d should be examined through research, but the writer\u2019s opinions should not be expressed. An analysis covers issues and problems that relate to specific events of a news nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Sharp, attention-getting lead that underscore the why\/how elements of the news<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Clarifies the news elements, i.e. timeliness, nearness, impact and prominence<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Clarifies through research the background necessary to understand current news<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Develops an understanding of the issues\/problems through interviews with varied and balanced sources<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Avoids personal opinion unless properly attributed<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Sentences, paragraphs of varied length, written clearly, concisely and vividly<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Effective use of facts\/quotes from both primary and secondary sources<\/li>\n\n\n\n
