{"id":4769,"date":"2020-06-16T10:26:35","date_gmt":"2020-06-16T14:26:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/acutabove.mipamsu.org\/?p=4769"},"modified":"2020-06-16T10:26:35","modified_gmt":"2020-06-16T14:26:35","slug":"stay-tuned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/acutabove.mipamsu.org\/?p=4769","title":{"rendered":"Stay Tuned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Staff<\/strong><br \/>\nEcho<br \/>\nGrand Blanc HS<br \/>\n1st Place Division 1, Yearbook Visual<br \/>\nOrganization Spread<\/p>\n<p><b>JUDGING CRITERIA<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designed as two-page visual unit, arrangement of photos, headline, copy, captions and white space invite reader onto spread and show careful planning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dominance is established and other elements are arranged in such a way as to lead reader\u2019s eye around spread<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adequate external margins provide frame for spread contents and are defined by at least one element on each side<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Photos effectively cropped, of varied size, shape and content; content concentrates on action photos<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center of interest in photo(s) is not trapped in gutter; action and faces in photos do not face off spread<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-rectangular photos, tilted photos and other special treatments are used sparingly and effectively to enhance overall design<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graphics and typography enhance readability and attractiveness of design<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headline has contemporary design and establishes visual\/verbal connection between photos and copy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Copy and captions are readable size and use readable font<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Captions should touch photos to which they refer. Group or clustered captions are permitted, but attention has been paid to making them easily accessible to reader<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If group pictures are included on spread, they are not the dominant element and are arranged to blend with the overall design of the spread<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While designs may be innovative, they adhere to journalistic guidelines<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>T<\/b><\/span>he Flint Insitute of Music (FIM) offered various afterschool programs for students to explore and pursue their musical talents. Many students played completely different instruments in band at school and in their extracurricular groups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cI first started playing the violin and then later, picked up the oboe,\u201d senior Matheu Wong said. \u201cEven though a wind instrument is different from a string instrument, having the prior knowledge from playing the violin helped me learn how to play the oboe quicker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The afterschool programs offered students freedom, but also taught them aspects of responsibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">It has certainly helped me to better organize my time,\u201d senior Taras-Michael Butrie said. \u201cBut I also got to establish better connections with different people from different schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Students in FIM music groups were given many different opportunities, including learning from different teachers and diving deeper into music theory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">There are things in a high school band group that you don\u2019t have time to learn, like music theory,\u201d senior John Shedd said. \u201cAt FIM, you have time to learn more outside of just music, which helps for your overall musical knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">FIM offered students the opportunity to travel and perform their music around the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">You get to go explore outside of school,\u201d sophomore Braeden Dixner said. \u201cWe went to France last year, and it was really fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Ultimately, FIM and Grand Blanc\u2019s band program came together to shape their musicians into beautiful performers and future leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cI want to inspire kids musically, just like I\u2019ve been inspired,\u201d Shedd said. \u201cSo that they have something to strive for.
