Stella Govitz<\/strong><br \/>\nKaleidoscope<br \/>\nBeaverton Jr.-Sr. HS<br \/>\n1st Place Division 4, Yearbook Verbal<br \/>\nHeadline Writing<\/p>\n<p><b>JUDGING CRITERIA<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clever\/imaginative, engaging the reader<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Draws reader into copy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contents of headline establishes visual\/verbal connection between photos and copy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headline\/secondary makes spread content clear<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adheres to rules of good journalism including: avoiding label headlines, freedom from editorial comment, careful editing and proofreading to eliminate mechanical errors, correct use of grammar<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cGuard through&#8211;we ran that [play] a lot. Point was at top and the wings go out and pass it to me, point would go to the basket and pass it back.\u201d Alieah Bassage (7) describes the function of a complex play that worked well for the team at the end of the season, but not at the beginning. The team learned significant organization, but also lived through nailbiting fourth quarters and fun inside locker room jokes. \u201cNone of the seventh grade girls had played organized basketball before,\u201d Coach John Mishler said. \u201cI had to teach them everything, and they definitely came a long way.\u201d Bassage stated that by the end of the season, the girls were wellaware of the plays, positions, and how to communicate as a team. Beyond this, the eighth grade team experienced an unexpected ordeal.
