{"id":4677,"date":"2020-06-03T14:54:55","date_gmt":"2020-06-03T18:54:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/acutabove.mipamsu.org\/?p=4677"},"modified":"2020-06-03T14:54:55","modified_gmt":"2020-06-03T18:54:55","slug":"wear-and-tear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/acutabove.mipamsu.org\/?p=4677","title":{"rendered":"Wear and Tear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Kendall Westgate<\/strong><br \/>\nEsprit de Corps<br \/>\nEisenhower HS<br \/>\n1st Place Division 2, Yearbook Verbal<br \/>\nSports Feature Writing<\/p>\n<p><b>JUDGING CRITERIA<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clear, relevant, engaging feature angle<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solid lead that draws reader into story<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meaningful student quotes that enrich story and reflect effective interviewing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evidence of adequate research<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Story meaningfully adds to sports coverage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adheres to rules of good journalism including: short paragraphs, effective transitions and use of active voice, freedom from editorial comment, careful editing and proofreading to eliminate mechanical errors, correct use of grammar<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p2\">While injuries affect day-to-day life, when an athlete can\u2019t play their sport it affects not only them but their team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">At the football game against L\u2019Anse Creuse North, junior corner back\/wide receiver <b>Brandon Ames <\/b>intercepted the ball. He was hit in the leg during the attempt to score, resulting in a torn anterior cruciate. Ames was forced to sit out for the rest of the season, which totaled four games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cI was carried off the field by my team. They have been there, making sure that my leg is healing correctly,\u201d he said. \u201cThey motivate me to work out and get back to playing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Ames had to undergo surgery and dealt with a boot and crutches yet still manages to keep a positive mindset and hope for a better future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cI will be proud of myself when I am back playing again because I will be able to compete again and help my team,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">In another varsity football game, this time against Romeo, senior offensive guard <b>Zachary Petkoff <\/b>went to block an opponent when he heard his left leg pop. After the sound, Petkoff realized he couldn\u2019t put any weight on it without pain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cIt sucks for me because I didn\u2019t get to finish out my senior year.
