{"id":306,"date":"2015-11-18T11:48:29","date_gmt":"2015-11-18T16:48:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/acutabove.wpengine.com\/?p=306"},"modified":"2015-12-03T15:22:58","modified_gmt":"2015-12-03T20:22:58","slug":"magazine-sales-drop-in-2014-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/acutabove.mipamsu.org\/?p=306","title":{"rendered":"Magazine sales drop in 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Sarah Bellovich<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Brownell Beat<br \/>\nBrownell MS<br \/>\n1st Place<br \/>\nMS Division, News Writing<br \/>\nNews Analysis<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nIt is only 7:00 in the\u00a0morning on November 25, 2013\u00a0but the front lawn of Brownell\u00a0is already bustling with activity.\u00a0Some 80 students pile onto\u00a0buses that would take them into\u00a0Ohio to Kalahari indoor water\u00a0park. All they had to do was\u00a0sell 10 magazines and it would\u00a0grant them a completely paid\u00a0for trip to Kalahari. The previous\u00a0year about 140 kids attended\u00a0the trip to Kalahari, which\u00a0is about 20% of the students at\u00a0Brownell!<\/p>\n<p>This year when you\u00a0look out on Brownell\u2019s lawn\u00a0only 40 some students will be\u00a0boarding a bus to take them off\u00a0school property.<\/p>\n<p>With the need to cut\u00a0the budget on the trip, will the\u00a0annual Brownell magazine result\u00a0in a loss of profit? Only\u00a0about half the amount of kids\u00a0will be taking the day off this\u00a0year, but not at Kalahari. Now\u00a0Joe Dumars is the new full day \u00a0experience for selling 10 magazines.\u00a0The total cost for transportation\u00a0to Joe Dumars was\u00a0$788 whereas for Kalahari it\u00a0was $1140.<\/p>\n<p>Ally Saigh, 8th grader\u00a0said \u201c I think students wanted to\u00a0work for Kalahari more because\u00a0they could go with friends out\u00a0of state for a day to a waterpark.\u00a0But Joe Dumars is also fun and\u00a0both have different things to do\u00a0but Kalahari is more money to\u00a0fund.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year Great American\u00a0included incentives such as\u00a0photo keepsakes, books, cards,\u00a0posters, calendars, and more\u00a0in an effort to boost sales. Evidently\u00a0this didn\u2019t help because\u00a0the money raised, which was\u00a0about 4,000 dollars, was half the\u00a0amount of the total profit from\u00a0last year.<\/p>\n<p>This could have been\u00a0due to the disappointment of\u00a0students who were robbed of\u00a0the opportunity to spend the\u00a0entire day, free of school at a \u00a0huge waterpark; that included\u00a0an assortment of waterslides, a\u00a0lazy river, wave pool and much\u00a0more. According to Dr. Dib,\u00a0another variable was the prizes\u00a0offered aren\u2019t as appealing anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Dib said \u201cBrownell\u00a0has been doing the magazine\u00a0sale for 30 years now and I think\u00a0it has finally run its course.\u201d\u00a0The prizes this year\u00a0began with a piece of chocolate\u00a0per magazine sold and every\u00a0Friday students could go\u00a0to the main lobby and receive\u00a0their bars. This small attraction\u00a0was preceded by a chance\u00a0to soak your teacher at lunch\u00a0if a student sold 3 magazines,\u00a0and if they sold five items he or\u00a0she would get to pick from the\u00a0cash box. The cash box included\u00a0bills ranging from 1 dollar to 50\u00a0dollars.
